In this chapter we discuss what is known about the molecular biology of influenza virus in relation to its structure and to the composition and function of its genome and proteins. Based on this knowledge, we explain why influenza viruses have a high mutation rate and an unusual high capacity to generate new viral variants. Also based on what it is known about the biology of these viruses we summarize what is known about the pathogenicity and virulence determinants of these viruses and also about the phylogenetic origin of the A/H1N1/2009 strain. Finally we briefly discuss about the production of vaccines, which represent the best protection method against the infection by this virus.
