Resumen
La familia lingüística maya está formada por 31 lenguas distintas. De ellas sólo dos son lenguas muertas, las restantes se utilizan como principal medio de comunicación en numerosas comunidades contemporáneas. Aquí se ofrece un breve panorama sobre su historia y evolución desde la época prehispánica hasta nuestros días Mayan language’s family was formed by 31 distinct languages, from these only two are now extinct, and the others remain spoken in several communities. Their history and evolution are the topic of this paper
