Motivation is the process that explains the beginning, the form, the intensity and the perseverance of the behavior directed towards the achievement of a certain goal. It can also be understood according to Viau (2009) as a theoretical construction that is not only observable, but also identifies a dynamic state of the situation, since a subject in choosing an activity or task commits and perseveres to achieve its objective. Therefore, based on the question: What motivation and demotivation factors affect the reading habits of ninth grade students at Orlando Higuita Rojas School? This qualitative, descriptive research was made by doing interviews with teachers and class observations, the following findings were made: 1. Without habits there is no motivation to read 2. There are intrinsic and extrinsic factors in motivation, intrinsic (experiences, interests, self-motivation) extrinsic (social context, teachers, media). 3. Difficulties in relation to subjects and spaces.
