Resumen
Captan is a fungicide widely used in agriculture around the world. Exposure and chronic
toxic effects are poorly understood in animal models. The objective of this work was to
evaluate the toxic effects of Captan fungicide on swine. The clinical trial was delineated
in two G1 groups (balanced diet with a dose of 500ppm of Captan Fungicide) and G2 (a
balanced diet with a dose of 500ppm Caulim). Seven pigs (3 months old) were allocated
per group, all other procedures being controlled and masked, the experimental period was
47 days. The animals were euthanized, performed a macroscopic evaluation and collected
samples of different organs in 10% formalin. Liver samples were analyzed quantitatively
under optical microscopy with routine (HE) and special staining (PAS, Prussian Blue and
Picro-Sirius) and cariometry. In the cariometric analysis, it was verified changes in the
dimensions and position of the hepatocyte nucleus demonstrating the effect of the
intervention on G1 in relation to G2. Anisonucleosis is a reversible morphological
change, it can induce apoptosis or mutational changes. This study can demonstrate
subchronic sublethal effects induced by Captan in swine. Chronicity studies are required
to evaluate the consequences of this anisonucleosis in mammals.
