Resumen
The liberal and routine use of episiotomy is strongly detrimental and ineffective and
may increase the risk of third and fourth degree perineal laceration of infection and
severe bleeding without reducing long-term problems of pain and urinary and fecal
incontinence. The aim of this study is to report the experience of the elaboration and
implementation of a protocol to reduce the rate of episiotomy. The present research
is an experience report of the elaboration and implantation of a protocol for the
reduction of the rate of episiotomy in a philanthropic maternity that attends pregnant
women of the Unified Health System. A literature review was carried out in the library
of the Ministry of Health and in nursing journals arranged in electronic means,
besides the field diary produced during the experience. This experience contributed
to the fact that the professionals perceived the relevance of the phenomenon of
inadequate episiotomy, and how this could negatively impact the woman's life, as
well as, it contributes to the reduction of the episiotomy cases in the study maternity.
