Urinary incontinence and its varied types have affected the population at large scale and with
bringing a cascade of problems with physical, psychological, social and cultural
repercussions. This study aims to identify practices for performing bladder catheterization for
people with urinary incontinence with less adverse effects. It is not simply focused on the
technical practices of the procedure, but the manner of approach. Utilizing the integrative
Review (RI), in which, if based on the analysis searches for the synthesis of knowledge in the
area, consisting of scientific publications found through computer search in scientific
databases. Currently, improved technological means, resources, actions and health promotion
have enabled nurses to offer quality care in relation to urinary elimination, developing
educational projects, promoting the water balance and prevent urinary tract infections (UTI).
The self-catheterization can result in complications, which could be avoided or minimized if
there was further information regarding the catheterization approach and device statement. To
check the available evidence if there is doubt in the realization and guidance of this
procedure, which is considered the problem of this research, we analyzed two articles that
made up the results of this study. It was noted the need for capacity building and training of
professionals, since some did not perform the technique according to the protocol in some of
the stages of bladder catheterization, in which the main preventive measure of UTI in the
handling of catheters: hand hygiene. It is essential that more professionals are trained in the
evaluation and diagnosis of difficulties for continence. The subsequent use of individualized
management strategies is the best practice for patient outcomes, which are favored care
proposals aimed at improving the quality of life, including with regard to economic aspects of
this issue.
