Resumen
Public Health in Brazil went through several modifications until it became what we know today as SUS (Unified Health System). Among all these changes, we highlight the insertion of the Veterinary Doctor, included in the Extended Family Health Center, in 2011, to assist in disease prevention and health promotion, especially in actions involving the field of Veterinary Medicine. The project aimed to assess the knowledge and interest in working in Public Health, of the resident Veterinary Doctor at the Federal University of Santa Maria - RS, in addition to their participation and involvement, during the discipline of interface with health in the actions of the Health Program. Health at School. For this, a questionnaire was applied to first and second year residents and professionals with completed residency, with qualitative questions about public health and PSE. With this study it was possible to conclude that undergraduate students of Veterinary Medicine graduate little prepared to work in public health and arrive at the residence with reduced interest and without knowing how to develop public health and PSE actions. The UFSM residency program has collaborated positively through the interface with health, modifying the resident's thinking by providing greater knowledge and involvement in health promotion actions. However, with regard to participation in the PSE, greater coordination and planning is necessary. of the actions to be carried out together with the multiprofessional team, mainly actions in the veterinary field, such as training on zoonoses, health and environmental education, guidance on population control and responsible ownership of animals..
