Abstract
Wireless sensor networks were created to track an environment or an object and to
perform some operation based on the data or to report them to be treated or examined. These
networks consist in the use of a large quantity of compact and autonomous devices called
sensor nodes, which have the capacity to communicate among themselves. They are applied
in many situations of daily life, such as medical, military, commercial, environmental and
agricultural applications. In this context, the goal of this work is to define the type of sensor
and operating system to be used in a project, which means to process the data obtained from
farm machinery equipped by sensors, to track the efficiency of the machine while at work. To
do this, a comprehensive review of literature on this recent and expanding subject is
presented. This work also describes the stages of hardware and operating system definition,
the technologies found and the advantages and disadvantages of each item within its scope.
