In this paper was analyzed the participation of women in neighborhood movements, precisely
community associations, knowing that these are considered popular urban social movements,
because it is aimed demonstrations before everything related to infrastructure improvements
neighborhoods located on the outskirts of cities. This study was conducted through interviews
with three women who participated in the Neighborhood Renaissance Community
Association in Santa Maria between 1997 and 2003, a mixed association, where women and
men participated. It was problematized the participation of women in this community
association, comprising part of the story of their struggles under the watchful specific gender,
assuming that both the acquisition of rights as the rise of women in public spaces and claim
are consequences of fights and not simply an inevitable historical process. Inquiries about the
ways used by them to articulate and achieve their goals as well, which the horizon of these
goals, guided the research. For this, was used the method of oral history, the literature review
and the historiographical analysis.
