Resumen
Head Mounted Displays (HMDs), used in games and virtual reality applications, can
induce symptoms of cybersickness, which impairs users’ experience and immersion. Symptoms
include dizziness, loss of balance, headache, dizziness and pallor. Most users of HMDs
experience one or more symptoms of cybersickness, which is also a limiting factor for game
developers for these environments. Many techniques traditionally developed for games on traditional
monitors cannot be applied to virtual reality HMDs. Considering the problem of cybersickness,
the objective of this work is to verify the effectiveness of applying techniques to
mitigate symptoms of cybersickness in HMDs in virtual reality environments. Two techniques
were implemented, rotational blur and tunneling, in a virtual reality environment that induces
cybersickness effects in the participants. As implementation support , the Unity 3D graphics
engine was used, which is compatible with most of the virtual reality headsets available on
the market. Minimizing the effects of cybersickness while using the environment was assessed
in a preliminary experiment and using questionnaires. The evaluated techniques proved to be
effective, but further study still needs to be conducted.
