Resumen
Traffic accidents are a worldwide public health problem. At different scales and levels of complexity, good urban mobility management and traffic engineering has the potential to considerably reduce the rates of traffic occurrences. This work analyzed data on traffic accidents with fatal victims in Santa Maria-RS, from the year 2010 to the year 2019, made available by the Department of Statistics of Detran / RS, in which it was possible to characterize qualitatively and quantitatively the traffic accidents that resulted in deaths. Consequently characterizing, as for sex, the type of participation and age group of the fatal victims, the month, period of the day and day of the week that the traffic disasters occurred, and the nature of the accidents. In addition, a statistical analysis was carried out using the Linear Correlation method, in which Pearson's coefficient was calculated to measure the degree of correlation between the variables: sex of the fatal victims and age group; period of the day and day of the week, nature of the accident and type of participation; type of participation and age group of victims. The research showed that men are the ones who most die in the traffic of Santa Maria, and that the correlation of victims of this sex with young people is classified as strong, and, still, identifying federal roads as those with the highest incidence of accidents with fatal victims. Analyzing the PDMU of this city, it was observed that the critical points of accidentality have already been treated, or are being treated, with the purpose of reducing them. The greatest difficulties encountered in carrying out this work are linked to the difficulty of accessing traffic accident data (with and without deaths) and the absence of details of the accident site. Thus, it is concluded that, for the analysis of traffic accidents to obtain increasingly satisfactory results, greater attention is needed in the process of collecting and storing this information.
