Resumen
Among children and teens to low back pain has become so common as in adults, reaching 70-80% of the population under 20 years old. The main objective was to determine the prevalence of low back pain, and secondary objectives were to present the socio-demographic, anthropometric, and physical activity level. Methodology - The target population consisted of 517 adolescents from 12 to 15 years of public schools in elementary school in Santa Maria. We conducted a cross-sectional study that included: 1) data collection sheet for demographic, anthropometric, and determine the prevalence of back pain and its intensity, 2) Nordic Questionnaire adapted for children and adolescents who investigates back pain last year and lifelong and 3) the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short form. Statistical evaluation was performed in a descriptive approach and bivariate analysis using the chi-square test, with significance level of 5%. Results - The objectives were partially achieved due to the complications presented in the collection period. Of the 329 adolescent participants observed a prevalence of 60.2% for low back pain for years and 55.9% for low back pain life. Conclusion - The publications in Brazil are scarce and epidemiological studies have methodological variability, as the instrument used to collect and prevalence for the period investigated. Nevertheless, studies have shown that low back pain in adolescents is high, being more common in females, increased with age and for those who are overweight.
