The university labs play an increasingly important role within universities, collaborating to
train people through teaching and research, and also bringing benefits to society as a whole
through extension activities. To ensure that these three areas of action are reconciled,
efficient management is needed, which is often forgotten in these laboratories. Thus, the
study aims to evaluate the applicability of the Hoshin Kanri method within the reality of the
university labs. A lab found at “Universidade Federal de Santa Maria” has been chosen to be
the center for this study. The research has as specific objectives to identify the difficulties of
building a strategic planning potentiated by the whole teaching, research and extension and
the impact in the routine of the laboratory of the actions provided by the unfolding strategy.
Divided into three phases, the work includes the elaboration of the strategic planning of the
laboratory, the crossing of information in order to identify in which the scenario differs from
the others and finally the strategy development through the Policy Deployment method. As a
result, the study brought the perception that management tools are applicable and can bring
benefits to university labs, provided they are adapted to their reality.
