Tobacco farming is an agricultural activity of great importance in Rio Grande do Sul, which stands out as the largest producer of leaf tobacco in the country, especially in the region of Vale do Rio Pardo, due to its representation in the tobacco industry in Brazil, being responsible for about 20% of national tobacco production. As a way of analyzing these factors, this work sought to build a characterization of the historical, social and market aspects of tobacco cultivation in the region of Vale do Rio Pardo. The research, regarding its technical procedures, was characterized from theoretical bases, the analysis of statistical data and secondary data, as well as scientific studies that helped in the historical interpretation and in the current configuration of the tobacco culture in the Vale do Rio Pardo, considering the development, the characteristics of the region in the production and in the use of the territory in the tobacco production. Analyzing the current scenario, in which the predominance of tobacco culture persists, the importance of recognizing young people as actors for the development and succession in establishments, for maintenance and introduction of new crops in tobacco producing properties in the region is highlighted. In addition, programs to support tobacco growers provide greater possibilities for growth and increased income in family farming, improving prospects, family and economic conditions.
