This study aimed to investigate how the patient is identified in the work process of the nursing
staff in medical, surgical and emergency clinical units. Objective: The study aimed to identify
the elements which make up the patient identification process among the team of nursing
professionals in medical, surgical and emergency clinical units and, specifically, knowing
which patient identification strategies related to safety are used in patient care. Method: The
study was characterized as a qualitative approach, of the descriptive type. The research subjects
were nurses and nursing technicians of medical, surgical and emergency units of a large
hospital, which serves medium and high complexity and it is located in the north of Rio Grande
do Sul state. Results: The data allowed the formation of three categories: nursing team's
perceptions about security in patient identification, effective security strategies in patient
identification and facilities and difficulties in implementing the patient safety program.
Conclusion: The study shows the importance of establishing security strategies, the use of
hospital bracelets on patient, it also allows us to understand that, in general, in the intuition in
which the study was developed, there are prevention strategies, which allow us to conclude that
the security regarding identification is adequate and in accordance with the literature.
