The Intelligent Networks Institute (INRI) is an institute linked to the Technology Center (CT) of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) that performs many different activities related to networks and energy, has laboratories and facilities that allow from computer simulations to destructive testing of electrical components, developing institutional research and performing services to third parties. One of these services is the testing of electrical transformers, carried out at the Medium Voltage Testing Laboratory. Currently, the institute has only a forklift with a load capacity of 2 (two) tonnes to handle these transformers, which does not meet their demands or guarantee safety to operators. Thus, there is the necessity for equipment that supports higher loads and makes possible to lift the transformers from above the truck body. Among the lifting and moving machines, Gantry Cranes are equipment that allow the movement and lifting of loads without the need of special buildings and still allow the free movement of its structure. The present task comprises an academic study that aims to develop the design of a gantry used to handle electric transformers in the INRI facilities. For the development of the project, a bibliographic review of the topic and a review of current rules are carried out. Moreover, are used a project management methodology composed of the informational, conceptual, preliminary and detailed design phases. The result of the work is a gantry crane design with load capacity of 10 (ten) tonnes that meets the needs raised by INRI.
