CNPq The objective of the present study was to clinically and histologically investigate the action of the sugarcane biopolymer gel in the process of repair of induced traumatic ulcers in the oral mucosa of rats. Traumatic ulcers were surgically induced on the lower lip mucosa of 45 male Wistar rats using a 5 mm diameter punch. The animals were divided into three groups: negative control (no treatment), positive control (treated with triamcinolone ointment) and experimental group (treated with sugarcane biopolymer gel). In each group 5 animals were euthanized on days 1, 3 and 7 after induction of the lesion. The animals were monitored daily, their weight was documented on the day of injury induction (day 0) and on the day of euthanasia. The clinical analysis of the temporal evolution of healing was done by comparing the size of the lesion area at day 0 and on the day of euthanasia. The histological parameters evaluated were the type and intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate, presence of necrosis and granuloma due to foreign body type and degree of reepithelialization of the lesion. In the statistical analysis, the F (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for the comparison between the groups or between the euthanasia times in relation to the variables. Mean weight loss occurred in all groups of animals throughout the study, with the highest loss in the negative control group (p <0.05). The group of animals treated with triamcinolone presented a higher mean area of the lesion on the 7th day of evaluation (p <0.05). At intervals of 3 and 7 days after injury induction, no difference in intensity of inflammatory infiltrate was observed between groups (p> 0.05). Our results suggest that the topical application of sugarcane biopolymer gel in traumatic oral ulcers of animals promotes a faster healing than triamcinolone ointment without increasing the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate.
