The photobook is a living object that has become a communication and aesthetic phenomenon in the contemporary photographic production. Our goal of research is to know how these books happen, how they come real. This dissertation presents how the photobooks happen in three complementary aspects. First, we present and examine the definitions and indefinitions for photobooks compared to other types of photographique books, focusing mainly on the zones of conflicts and encounters. Afterwards, we present a possible historical route, from the first photography book, still in the nineteenth century until the present moment, so to situate the contemporary production of photobooks in Brazil, in historical, technological and sociocultural terms. In the sequence we will talk about the production processes of the photobooks based on the decisions and choices that need to be made by the author(s). We examine the role of montage, in front of the regimes of art, in the construction of the visual or verb-visual narratives of the photobooks. It then, we address the visual, textual and graphic elements, materials and the main activities involved in the production process of the photobooks. Lastly, we open space to listen some singular narratives of the creation of some photobooks by their own authors, through the interviews conducted. This dissertation, therefore, proposes a course that is from the more general, categories and definitions, to the more specific, the singularity of the creation of each of the books. With this, we hope to know more about photobooks and their transformations in the world in which they live.
