Actually, due to the increasing degradation problems observed in the structures, there was a greater concern with the durability of the structural parts. From this, there was an increase in the coatings prescribed in ABNT NBR 6118: 2014, increasing, consequently, the section of the parts. For abutments, ABNT NBR 6118: 2014 recommends that for all types of building, the minimum dimension requirements must be met. However, the efforts in the pillars of small buildings are so small that they make the normative prescriptions superior that would be necessary for this type of edification. The smallest size of the pillars prescribed by ABNT NBR 6118: 2007 was 12cm, with the update of the standard, the smallest dimension became 14cm. It was verified that the increase of the cross section of the abutments in ABNT NBR 6118: 2014, was due to the increase of the cover to guarantee a greater durability to the structures. The increase of the minimum size of the pillars, brings an increase in the cost of the work to compatibilize the pillars with the architecture. With the objective of evaluating the possibility of reducing the dimensions of the pillars for a better compatibility with the architecture in small buildings, parameters such as the energy of deformation, using the area and the stresses acting on the pillars, and the durability, using equation which relates the increase of the cover and the durability of the parts. n this work, three buildings were analyzed that fit the parameters of small size, 3 walls under the action of the wind whose height of the pillars does not exceed 3 meters and 2 buildings of up to 3 floors whose characteristics are described in the specification of small buildings. The analysis of the buildings showed that the increase in durability is not only guaranteed by the increase of the covering of the structural parts and in terms of capacity resistant to the change of the pillars from 12 cm to 14 cm, do not change in structural terms the resistant capacity.
