CNPq The ANEEL auctions A-6 and A-4 that were held on December/2017 related to new generation plants will make it possible injecting in the Brazilian Interconnected Power System a total amount of 897.6 MW from wind power origin (727.4 MW) and solar power origin (170.7 MW) in the next 4 to 6 years and express a clear tendency towards such a nature of energy in the Brazilian power system. It must be pointed out that the renewable energy integration in the power grid, in special solar and wind resources, exhibits two remarkable aspects that make the integration of those forms of energy generation distinct from the integration of those more conventional ones in terms of variability and unpredictability, characteristics that are known in conjunction as intermittency of the renewable resources. The energy generation as provided by a solar plant is directly influenced by two factors; the first one has a deterministic nature and is associated with solar geometry, physical laws governing the Earth translation movement around the Sun as well as the distance between both celestial bodies. The second factor has a probabilistic nature that comprises the transit of the clouds as well as the atmospheric conditions and exhibits a strong stochastic behaviour that makes it only possible understanding the phenomenon by the use of empirical models originated from the observation and experience of the researchers and specialists or, alternatively, by the use of physical-mathematical models imposing a large computational burden in order to process complex algorithms with a considerable amount of input variables running in computers employed for meteorological tasks. The present research work primarily investigates the spatial distribution of large-scale photovoltaic power plants, connected to the transmission system under the form of clusters as a way to promote a spatial smoothing of solar intermittency and its impact in the power system. The study is carried out with emphasis in the Brazilian Northeast, a well-known region very attractive for the erection of PV power plants due to its high solar radiation. A methodology based on Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) tool is proposed in order to weight in an optimal way the power generated by a set of distributed solar power plants across the northeastern territory.
