In the electrical power system, the development of new insulation materials allows a continuous evolution, in this way, in recent years the use of polymeric materials for electrical insulation has become increasingly common. Despite the effectiveness of these materials, cavities may arise inside the material insulation due to impurities or air bubbles during their manufacture, or even due to misuse in the assembly and installation procedure, which, even if it does not cause its immediate failure, can trigger small internal discharges and reduce the life of the material by slowly deteriorating the polymer, which can eventually lead to the complete breakdown of the dielectric. This research proposes to conduct a study of the behavior of polymeric insulators through distribution of the electric field when it has an internal cavity and various layers of pollution. This work uses the finite element method to calculate the effects of the electric field distribution in insulating materials with internal cavities. The use of this method becomes difficult when applied in objects with complex geometries, as is the case of the polymeric insulators used in this dissertation. To facilitate this task, has been of great help in scientific studies the use of a software that performs
these calculations. In this research the software used was COMSOL Multiphysics R_ and the results obtained demonstrate the variation of the electric field inside the cavity as a function of the voltage to which the insulator is subjected, of the cavity’s geometry variation and also in terms of the level of pollution surface of the insulator.
