Throughout history there have been changes in the relation established between subjects and time. This thesis seeks to understand the construction of meaning regarding the relation between work time and free time for hospitality service industry workers. A qualitative study was carried out based on Marxist theory of language, especially Bakhtin (2006). The theoretical discussion centers on socio-historical changes that have occurred regarding the categories time, work time, and free time and the influence of economic rationality on the social construction of these categories. The discussion is complemented by a debate on work in the context of late modernity, including the hospitality sector. The research corpus was drawn up using virtual non-participating observation, inspired by netnography, drawing material for analysis from the “Escravos da Hotelaria” [Hotel Slaves] speech community. Analysis of this corpus was based on Bakhtinian Discourse Analysis. The issue analyzed include the characteristics of work, working conditions, social relations at work, and the relation between work time and free time. The results indicate that some of these individuals are working in precarious circumstances. In terms of social relations at work, the need for humanization and recognition are issues that appear in the interactions studied. Finally, the relation between work time and free time is made explicit by the focus on work time, which is crucial for rational economics and the logic of capitalism. It should be noted that the intensification of work time interferes with the experience of free time, which becomes a period for recovering sufficient physical energy by way of sleeping to return to work. The meanings constructed around the relation studied thus involve pleasure, suffering, resistance by way of ironic humor, the quest for recognition and humanization, the centrality of work time and the denial of free time, and the quest for freedom and an authentic life outside of work. Given the impact of work on leisure among other people, this subject pervades the construction of meaning, since the intensification and centrality of work time has an influence on the experience of free time, which is used basically for physical and psychological recuperation in order to return to work, thereby affecting the experience of other social activities, including family time and leading these workers to demand the right to have the time to live their lives.
