CAPES This thesis is a result of in-depth qualitative interviews with 10 journalist-writers and two editors. From the conversations with the reporters Adriana Carranca, Caco Barcellos, Daniela Arbex, Fernando Morais, Laurentino Gomes, Leonencio Nossa, Lira Neto, Rubens Valente, Ruy Castro and Zuenir Ventura and with the editors Fernando Mangarielo, from Alfa-Omega Publisher Company and Otávio Costa, from Companhia das Letras Publisher Company, it aims to understand how journalist-writers, who writes nonfictional novels, deal with a different field: the publishing universe of the book publishers. And also with other forces, such as judicial sanctions which surrounded the private work of biographers. These journalists argue about the main legacies of editorial officies, their relationship with the public from their imagination and with the publishing market, ethical dilemas, advantages of having a longer production time, even if dealing with a considerable volume of documents and oral testimonials, and also their relationship with the characters and the rescue of memory. In search of bringing to light these and other issues, it was necessary to be attentive to the historical process of the non-fictional novels published in Brazil, from the crucial changes in its forms of production to the professional profiles of the journalist-writers. The semi-structured questionnaires were guided by the central question that moves the research: How do these authors think the field of journalism from this type of extensive practice of the journalism reporting in books? Journalist-writers work in a more individualized and autonomous way than the professionals who live hierarchical work relations routines inside the editorial officies. These profissional count on extended time for verification and writing. They focus on specific thematic universes and deal with the book publishing market, but not with the newspaper and magazine market. According to the nature of the nonfictional novels, they also work with less "perishable" issues, though they are not packaged as factual. Given these conditions, do these journalist-writers find what challenges in their purpose of interpretation, could be these actions considered framing and narration of reality? The interviews and the theoretical underpinning in the journalism studies through the constructivist perspective of interactionism allowed to understand the motivations and the values of these professionals. In addition, their productive routines have specific characteristics. Although, as journalists, these writers continue to share the same techniques of interviewing oral sources and organizing documentary material, these and other practices sometimes appear reconfigured in the production process of the nonfictional novel. From their voices, it is possible to better understand their ethos, in other words, their way to be in the contemporary Brazilian journalism.
