Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is the third best-selling polymer in the world because of its versatility and properties, such as being inert, non-toxic and insulating. It is used in several areas, from the construction industry to the toy and food industry. As well as PVC, polyvinyl alcohol, PVA, also has interesting properties, such as biocompatibility and resistance to acids and bases. It is used in several segments, such as the food industry and biomedical applications. Both PVC and PVA have some limitations, such as relatively low thermal resistence. The objective of this work is to investigate the mechanical and thermal properties of PVC and PVA films reinforced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO). This material has relevant mechanical properties, being one of the most resistant materials known, and it is also an excellent thermal conductor. The films were prepared by the solution casting technique, using tetrahydrofuran as solvent for PVC, and water as solvent for PVA. Graphene oxide (GO) and rGO were synthesized via the modified Hummers method. The amount of GO or rGO used in the films were 0,5%, 1%, 1,5% e 2% (m/m). The GO-reinforced PVA films were treated with hydrazine in order to chemically reduce the GO into rGO. The effects caused by rGO in the polymer matrices were evaluated by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical tensile tests. The DRX showed that there was incorporation of rGO in the polymer matrices. The TGA indicated that there was an improvement in the temperature of the beginning of degradation for both polymers. The mechanical tests showed that there was no significant change in tensile strength and Young's modulus in the PVC/rGO composites. On the other hand, all the PVA composites presented changes in these properties. Only the PVA/0.5% composite presented a lower value in tensile strength when compared to pure PVA. The FTIR did not show significant changes for both polymers with ou without the reinforcements.
