The present dissertation aims to probe the problem of human action, and the various consequences stemming from its operation, either positive or negative. For this reason, we will build our reflection upon the philosophical basis laid down by the greatest exponent of patristic philosophy: Saint Augustine of Hippo. We will set forth that on Augustine's moral philosophy, love is the key element for understanding the human actions, for it constitutes the driving force that directs man to the desired object. It is necessary, beforehand, the analysis of the true object sought by man, the true happiness, namely, God Himself. We will explain the causes that set man apart from the blessed life, as well as the need for a ethical-moral reflection undertaken by the individual. After that, we will distinguish the various meanings used in antiquity for the term love, and how Saint Augustine broaden its sense. Furthermore: we will talk of how love incites the relationships among individuals. We will begin a reflection about the work De Doctrina Christiana and the order established by God, that must be loved by man, enthroning in the work the idea that the christian moral is the means of purifying human love, and of converting it to divine love for the good life, realizing that man can live either according to God, or under his own instincts. Lastly, we will point out how Augustine elaborates in the aforementioned work, a moral rule furthering the good life: the uti-frui, that, united to christian moral, will reorder human love.
