CAPES The proposal of this dissertation is to present a feminist and postcolonial perspective into the analysis of the experience of female characters in the novel Caramelo and in the short stories “Woman Hollering Creek”, “Never Marry a Mexican” and “Bien Pretty” that are part of the book Woman Hollering Creek and other stories by the Chicana writer Sandra Cisneros to illustrate how transculturality influences female life in the US/Mexico border environment. Chicanas live in a unique situation of social vulnerability, because they suffer from a triple social pressure: of gender, of the Mexican culture and of the American. Thus, our study turns to literature in order to investigate how the female characters of Cisneros have their identities and subjectivities affected by the physical and cultural borderland environment. For this, we follow the path of Chicano feminism, the meaning of border and how this environment enhances violence against women, with the theoretical support of Cultural/Postcolonial Studies, among which we cite Anzaldúa (1987), Spivak (2010), Hall (2015) and Walter (2015). Through this study, we could problematize the experiences of women marked by the phenomenon of transculturation with the representation of cultures in transit: the one of Mexican origin and the American with their paths of conflict, tension and prejudice. Sandra Cisneros through her literature, discusses the problem of the Chicano woman, by showing her situation of vulnerability, suffering and giving a way out, even in the literary imaginary, to her characters. For, as stated by Walter (2015), the capacity of literature is precisely to allow the reader to open the horizon so that the reader has the possibility to evaluate his choices, that is, to change what they believe to be wrong and to keep what is right. From the perspective of Chicano feminism, we see that it is possible for women to empower themselves, and to seek to “decolonize” both the machismo of their original patriarchal culture and the condition of subordination imposed by Anglo-American hegemony.
