Physical fitness is related to the individual's ability to perform daily tasks without demonstrating muscular fatigue, so it is up to the school physical education to provide students with experiences that favor the development of these physical capacities. The objective of this study was to understand the possible differences in the physical fitness level among children from 7 to 10 years of age from the public and private school, participants and non - participants of school physical education classes; is a field research, of quantitative, descriptive and comparative character, carried out in the municipality of Feira Nova, located in the agreste of Pernambuco. The sample consisted of 43 elementary school students of both sexes. The evaluations carried out were body weight and physical fitness tests (muscular-abdominal resistance, flexibility, agility, speed, manual grip strength and horizontal impaction) were based on the FITNESSGRAM test battery protocol. Descriptive analysis of the data was associated with the Shapiro-wilk normality test. We considered that there was no significant difference in the body weight variable, but in the mean values, the children of the private school presented a higher level in the physical fitness component, the velocity. We emphasize the importance of further studies to better understand the role of physical education classes in the acquisition of these motor skills of schoolchildren.
