The uncertain financial market and the events in the economy and politics interfere in the stock’s performance. The fluctuation in the stock price causes uncertainty to investors about the return on their investments. Therefore, knowing the market behavior and the factors that influence the stock’s volatility is relevant for investors’ decision making, in view of the acquisition of more accurate information about the market minimizes the risks arising from the variations in stock prices In this perspective, the general aim of this study is to measure the impact of accounting (company size, company market value, current liquidity index, long-term debt rate, return on assets, total asset change) and macroeconomic (PIB, IPCA and SELIC) variables on the volatility of the stock return of the companies that integrate the Brazilian Index IBrX 100 of the BM & FBOVESPA in the period from 2010 to 2016. To do so, two hypothesis were tested: the first one was that the accounting variables do not explain the volatility of the stock returns and the second one was that the macroeconomic variables also do not explain the volatility of the stock returns. The sample of this study consisted of 75 publicly traded companies, totaling 1875 observations. Statistical techniques of simple and multiple linear regression with panel data were used. Based on the obtained results, it was possible to verify that the insertion of the macroeconomic variables increased the explanatory power of the model with the accounting variables and the variation of the total asset was not significant in any of the calculated regression models. In addition, both hypotheses of this study were rejected. Due to the relevance of stock volatility to investors, such findings demonstrate the need to deepen the study about more accounting and macroeconomic variables that may affect the volatility of stock returns, as well as others such as socio-environmental, political and business.
