Control and operation of generators connected to the electrical grid through static converters, filtering of harmonic components and protection of transmission lines by distance relays are examples of situations in which it is usually needed to use some synchronization method in order to provide the reference values for currents and voltages, since they are required by the control system. If the goal is to identify the Fundamental-Frequency Positive-Sequence (FFPS) component of a three-phase signal, one of the main figures of merit used in the evaluation of synchronization methods is the settling time of the system. The frequency- Adaptive Generalized Delayed Signal Cancellation (A-GDSC) method together with a classical three-phase PLL (A-GDSC-PLL), presents a good performance in the FFPS vector estimation. In this thesis, it is developed a new synchronization method, based on A-GDSC-PLL, which it is called VS-GDSC-PLL. In several practical electrical situations, the new technique is able to identify the FFPS vector in a period significantly lower than the original technique. Such situations include typical transients in the generation and transmission in high and medium voltage levels, including short-circuits and the connection of non-linear loads. As an offshoot of this study, it is applied the GDSC to develop a new method for fast discrimination between short- circuit and transformers energizing current, capable of correctly classifying unbalanced faults in less than 1/4 of the FFPS period. Finally, in order to improve the process of analyzing transient electrical phenomena, it is developed a new physically insightful tool to model electrical signals, with the focus on identifying the decaying sinusoidal and dc components of three-phase signals.
