FACEPE The alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) is a pathology that occurs when the alkali present in cement reacts with reactive components of the aggregate, forming a gel which, in the presence of humidity, expands, what can lead to cracks and further deterioration of the structure. The best way to avoid its occurrence is prevention. Among the ways to prevent, it is the use of a non-reactive aggregates and, in order to test the reactivity of an aggregate, one of the most used techniques is the accelerated mortar bar test, once it takes only 30 days. Nevertheless, studies have shown that this test can have false positive or false negative results. Thus, in order to have a better understanding of factors that can affect the result of this test, the present study aimed to analyse the influence of the type of aggregate crushing. There were used jaw and roller crushers to reduce two aggregates to the dimension required by the test, and the results were compared. It was also evaluated the influence of the type of crusher with the use of mineral admixtures in replacement to cement. There were used silica fume in the percentages of 8% and 15%, and aggregate powder from reactive aggregate, in the percentages of 10% and 20% replacing cement, with and without chemical admixture, in order to verify its efficiency as a mitigating agent of AAR expansions and the influence of the use of the chemical admixture. Along with the mortar bar test, it was performed petrographic analysis and miniature concrete prism test, to evaluate the results obtained. It was observed a significant influence of the type of crusher for the reference combinations, due to the difference in the specific superficial areas and sizes of particles generated in the crushing process. This influence has showed to be variable depending on the type and size of the aggregate. The combinations with silica fume and reactive aggregate powder, in general, were not significantly influenced by the type of crusher used. There were obtained conflicting results for the mortar bar and the miniature concrete prism test for compositions with mineral admixtures, indicating the influence of the aggregate size in the expansion tests. For the combinations with the use of chemical admixture, the was an increase in expansions, but not up to a significant level. The type of crusher has showed as an important variable in the analysis of the reactive potential of an aggregate using the mortar bar test, and, if not considered, can lead to mistaken classifications. When using mineral admixtures, though, this variable was not significant.
