The scientific literature is scarce with respect to sustainable proposals of physical exercise directed to the population residing in Institutions of Homes for the Aged (ILPI). Although the idea of active aging is widespread, ILPIS experience various difficulties in making older people more physically active. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of sit-up and sit-in activities on lower limb muscle fitness and quality of life in elderly women living in philanthropic LSILs in Recife. A quasi-experimental study was carried out in six ILPIs, which serves elderly women from the metropolitan area of Recife and the interior of the state of Pernambuco. The study population consisted of 24 elderly women. The mean age was 82.6 ± 5.8 in the intervention group and 77.5 ± 4.4 in the control group; the intervention group presented a significant increase in the mean number of repetitions of the sit-up test (p-value = 0.033); In Timed Up and Go, there was a significant increase in the end of the evaluation in the control group only (p-value = 0.007). The quality of life domains in the Whoqol-Bref have not changed. The results of the present study suggest that a training program with the chair lift and sit exercise has a positive impact on the strength and functional mobility of the lower limbs in elderly women living in Homes for the Aged.
