Resumen
In this work an exploratory research was carried out, which was based on the collection, with the aid of researches, measurements, with application use, and field surveys, of the characteristic variables of the public transport operation by bus. Among the variables collected are the flow of passengers along the line, operating speed, stopping time, frequency of service. The analysis of the indicators brings to the fore a comprehensive knowledge of the system, which allows the identification of distortions and subsidizing the decision making, in order to improve the operation. In the present study, the low performance of the Natal public transport line 73 was verified. Despite presenting itself as the city's most demanded line, it has a low level of utilization, as measured by the IPK, when compared to the standards of modern public transport systems, as well as a high cycle time. There is still a high level of irregularity in the fulfillment of the service, with the headway varying from 0 to 24 minutes. The results still show a conflict of supply among the line's own groups, because they meet at a certain point in the itinerary, as well as with vehicles from other similar routes. Such facts provide subsidy for a path of action based on hierarchy, from the modification of the system to two structural lines and one round line.
