Introduction: In line with the Psychiatric Reform, at the end of the 1980s, the perspective of creating services that appear as innovative practices to the asylum model emerged. The Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) were one of the strategies that emerged with a view to replacing psychiatric hospitals, aiming at welcoming and providing clinical care to people with psychological distress, and are configured as the main strategic point of the Care Network. Psychosocial. Objective: To evaluate the association between the amount of CAPS and hospitalizations for psychiatric conditions in health regions and in the state of Rio Grande do Norte from March 2008 to 2020, in addition to verifying the incidence of hospitalization rates for psychiatric conditions in the country state. Methodology: This is an ecological study of time series, with a quantitative approach, which was carried out from the collection of secondary data obtained through the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) and which were submitted to descriptive and statistic. Results: The results showed a reduction in the number of psychiatric hospitalizations due to a greater amount of CAPS for most health regions (p < 0.001), in addition to a strong and negative correlation (R = - 0 .881) and p < 0.001 between the number of CAPS and the occurrence of psychiatric hospitalizations throughout the state of Rio Grande do Norte over the years. Conclusion: It was possible to observe the importance of building the Psychiatric Reform for deinstitutionalization from the creation of territorially based services such as CAPS. These findings reinforce the importance and continuity of mental health policies implemented from the Sanitary and Psychiatric Reform over the years.
