Resumen
The development of the ornamental stones industry in Brazil causes environmental
problems related with the waste generation, mainly in the stone cutting process. These
residues are generated in the form of sludge that is stored on settling tanks in the marbles for
later disposal, but the settling occurs in a slowly way. To speed up the process it was added a
nonwoven geotextile for the analyses in laboratory of the dewatering of this material in
laboratory. Once studied the efficiency of the process it is necessary to evaluate certain
variables such as infiltration area, the influence of different types of geotextile and water
flow. The water flow of the dewatering was evaluated through the concept of repeatability
that consists in the variation in measurements obtained with one instrument, in this article a
polypropylene box with a hydrometer, when used by an appraiser while measuring the same
characteristic, that is the water flow. The repeatability was studied through several fillings of
the box measuring the volume so that it can be used to posterior water flow data. Four
analysis have been made, with different filtrating layers disposal using gravel and nonwoven
geotextile with grammage of 250 g/m². With these assays it was possible to obtain near water
flow results, that indicates the repeatability of the process. Furthermore, it was increased the
trial time due to the addition of the filtration layers, what result in an efficient alternative to
speed up the dewatering process in the settling tanks of the marbles.
