dc.description.abstractanimals were anesthetized with ketamine and xylazine intraperitoneally, after was the insertion of a cateter rectally diameter of 2 mm to 8 cm in colon height with administration of 1 ml of acetic acid (4% in saline 0.9%). The treatment was by oral gavage the first to the seventh day. There were clinical character analysis, macroscopic and microscopic. All groups showed diarrheal episodes after the induction of colitis. Consumption of feed was associated with weight loss in all groups, with Group marked Sulfasalazine. There was statistically significant difference in lesion scores of the colon between the control group and Colitis (P<0.001) and sulfasalazine (P<0.01) groups, as well as between groups Anacardium occidentale L. 300mg / kg and Colitis (P<0.04). The relation weight / length intestine revealed that typically increased bowel weight is inversely proportional to its length. In review microscopic / histopathology, the largest tissue damage occurred in Colitis Group, followed by Sulfasalazine Group. In the control group, the epithelium showed continuous and intact, with well developed crypts. The groups AO300 and AO500 presented in general most parameters with mild, with the exception of the inflammatory infiltrate in AO300 group, with moderate intensity. The findings showed a good response Annacardium occidentale L., especially at a dose of 300mg/kg, compared to standard treatment, and strengthens the interest in further study for with ulcerative colitis.
