Impacto da cobertura de saneamento básico na incidência de doenças e nos gastos com saúde pública no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte

Abstract

Based on the data available on the portal of the Department of Informatics of SUS (DATASUS), Transparency Portal, the Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS) Portal, it was possible to evaluate the Sanitation Basic in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, the temporal evolution of the coverage by water supply, sanitary sewage, solid waste collection, and evolution of some diseases related to the deficiency in Basic Sanitation, with the purpose of verifying the impacts of the coverage by sanitation spending on public health. It was found, with the bibliographic review, that adequate sanitation reduces the incidence of parasitic and infectious diseases transmitted by water or whose agent is transported by sewage or by vectors that proliferate in the trash. Secondary data analysis revealed a reduction in hospitalizations for related diseases when investments were made in basic sanitation. This fact allowed to conclude that the population coverage with basic sanitation is able to reduce the public health costs with the reduction of the expenses with curative medicine.
