Understanding the importance and health surveillance within the context of public health, highlights the need for frequent updating of materials and methods that can help in this process of health production. To do so, characterize the products that have been released in this context punctuates this need. In this sense, the study aimed to define the profile of the theoretical and methodological publications in national health surveillance in public health indexed in the database Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). We used an inductive approach and descriptive statistical procedure from direct documentation. A search of the data was performed in 8 national journal, using “health surveillance”, and analyzed for total of 50 articles. After selection of studies, traced the profile of these publications on the area of knowledge in health surveillance, characterization of level of evidence and methodological approach. The results show that the majority of publications are concentrated in the area of policy, organization and management of the National Health Surveillance Agency (66%), with evidence level VI (92%) and qualitative approach (56%). The study identified the characteristics of publications, and highlights the potential productive Sanitary.
