Predictions of the ultimate lateral load capacity of poles embedded in a compacted sandy soil improved with cement with a 10-% content by weight are assessed in this paper. Analysis included results of tests on four poles in a power station. The coefficients of horizontal soil reaction of the soil-cement mixture were backanalyzed from the method of Matlock and Reese (1961) and the experimental results obtained with the lateral load tests. Results of the ultimate lateral load capacity collected in the field were compared against predictions given by the limit equilibrium methods of Broms (1961) and Brinch Hansen (1961), and a p-y method implemented in a computer program. The ultimate lateral load capacities obtained with the p-y method were significantly larger than the experimental results. Brinch Hansen’s method gave rather underestimated predictions. On the other hand, Broms’ method gave close predictions to the field results. Moreover, the p-y method provided reasonably close lateral load versus lateral displacement relationships, as compared to the curves obtained from the load tests performed in the field.
