This paper investigates the production of space through and by the cinema as a mode of representation and symbol of the urban society. For this, it will comment on how two Brazilian films - Não Por Acaso (Philippe Barcinski, 2007) and Edifício Master (Eduardo Coutinho, 2002) - have constructed images of the modern and postmodern metropolis by the way of producing a new space’s aesthetics. The first film is a fiction feature set in the city of São Paulo, the latter, a documentary that has as background the city of Rio de Janeiro, more specifically the neighborhood of Copacabana. Thus, the cinema is considered here as a valuable media for analysis of the production of space within modernity.
