Resumen
Introduction: this study, the authors evaluated the prevalence of benign neoplasias among the surgical pieces forward to the Pathological Anatomic Service of the Oral Pathology discipline at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte from 1982 to 2002. Method: Four thousand, five hundred ninety-two histopathological registers were analized. Results: The results demonstrated that the benign neoplásicas corresponded to 7.31% of this total. Among the different benign histological types of neoplasias, the most frequent were fibroma (34.9%), papiloma (16.7%) hemangioma (14%) and giant-cell fibroma (12.3%). Conclusion: These lesions affected the female sex more frequently (67%) and fourth decade of life (20.6%). The most affected anatomical location was the buccal mucosa (29.5%). The majority of the lesions presented slow growth (67%) and exofitic (67%).
