Resumen
Patienty safety is a theme that became worldwide when the report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), To err is Human gained relevance. The World Health Organization has proposed the “Global Safe Use of Medicines” as the 3rd Global Patienty Safety Clallenge. In Brazil, the National Patient Safety Program is established and, specifically, the Patient Safety protocol for Prescribing, Using and Administering Medicines. These documents highlight the need to adoption of specific protocols for high-alert medications because they are at the greatest risks of causing significant damage to patients when there is a failure in some stage of its use. The present study aimed to obtain the panorama of Dispensing high-alert medications in a new public hospital service for pediatrics in Natal/RN, since the pediatric population is one of the most susceptible to adverse events. The aim is to implement safety barriers, propose mechanisms for action and future interventions because they consider that they can contribute, effectively, to improve the assistance provided. It is a descriptive and observational research with a Quant-Quali approach, presenting a bibliographic and documentary design. Data collection was carried out through on-site verification and the aplication of a questionnaire available to all pharmacy professionals. Thus, it was concluded that, the implementation of barriers contributes to minimize and event prevent the occurrence of erros in the dispensation of high-alert medications promoting the safety of pediatric patients in this hospital unit.
