Illegal deforestation in Caatinga sometimes corresponds to the supply of local energy demand, even though options for legalized firewood are available in the market. Recent studies show that the red ceramic industry is the largest consumer of firewood in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Considering PMFS firewood as a viable alternative to supply this sector, this study aimed to analyze the current situation of forest biomass supply in the NB, in line with the demand for this input in the red ceramic industry. Obtaining the number, area and volume of the current PMFS was granted by the IDEMA responsible for forest management in Rio Grande do Norte. Annual Operational Plans (POAs) were analyzed to obtain the volume of wood available over a period of one year. With the survey, it was found the existence of 22 PMFS with authorization for forest exploitation valid for the year 2019, distributed in 20 municipalities of the state, totaling an area of 988.99 hectares. A current supply of available firewood for energy in the NR of 26,223.13 tMS.year-1 was calculated. Note that the current supply of firewood from the PMFS meets only 5.5% of the energy demand of the state's ceramic industry. On the other hand, the potential supply of firewood available in the state's Caatinga remnants exceeds the sector's demand by more than six times. It is concluded that there is a need for reinforcement at the governmental level, to propose measures that stimulate the use of the forest resource in a legalized way proportional to the current consumption.
