Resumen
The CO2 capture and storage (CCS) from power plants is a potential emissions mitigation
system. A natural gas combined cycle in Brazil is taken as case study, and this option is
analyzed and compared with the original case using exergoeconomic and
exergoenvironmental impact (EI) approach for electricity production. The environmental
impact indicator used is the eco-indicator 99. A detailed assessment of cost and EI for
components, input and infrastructure were carried out. The outcomes indicate a decrease of
the EI rate of CCS by 70%. On the other hand, the specific costs of electricity were increased
for the second case by 15.90 % for the CCS. The results also show that the CCS system
implies on a 40 MW energy penalty. Thus, the results presented demonstrate that the
implementation of the CCS system increase the cost rate and the specific costs also causing a
decrease in the net power produced by the plant. However the CCS system produces
outstanding results on the environmental aspect, with a reduction of 90% on the mass flow
rate of the carbon dioxide emitted and a 70% reduction on its mass concentration in the
emissions of the plant. Discussions about further improvements have been proposed.
