Resumen
The objective of this thesis was to investigate the experience of a family with Coda,
made up of deaf parents and two listening daughters, in the processes of interaction
in everyday life. It is a qualitative research, carried out from the perspective of (auto)
biographical studies, according to Ferrarotti (1988); Josso (2007; 2010); DeloryMomberger (2008); Passeggi (2010; 2014). The survey and data construction were
carried out in 2018 and 2019, in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. We count on
the collaboration of a family with Codas, who gave us interviews about the
experiences lived in family and social contexts. The criteria for choosing the
participants was family composition and because they are speakers of Libras as a
natural language, used within the family. As a methodological procedure for
collecting and analyzing sources, we use the narrative interview proposed by
Jovchelovitche Bauer (2014). Due to the diversity of issues involved, the theoretical
framework addresses family constitution and interaction between deaf parents and
hearing daughters. In this sense, we rely on Vygotski (1991); Quadros (2017);
regarding the concept of sign language in Ferreira Brito (1998); Frames; Karnopp
(2004). About the concept of family, we are inspired by Aries (1986); Romanelli
(2016) and about culture in Tylor (1920); Laraia (2001); Hall (1997). With regard to
Deaf Culture we support Skliar (1998); Strobel (2009), regarding Bilingualism in
Macnamara (1967); Grosjean (1994) and Bimodal Bilingualism, in Tussi; Ximenez
(2010); Quadros (2017). The analyzes allow to highlight as results: a) the use of the
two languages in a hybrid way within the family; b) the prevalence of the use of
Libras by the first daughter, revealing periods of adhesion and resistance; c) while
the eldest daughter highlights the centrality of Libras in family and social interactions,
on the other hand, the narratives of the youngest daughter prioritize the use of the
Portuguese language in everyday spaces in communication with parents, including
Libras spaces. d) the process of reframing the relationship between deaf parents and
hearing daughters at different historical moments related to the rights of professional
accessibility. We conclude that the family with Coda is bilingual because it is inserted
in two language communities and interact in two languages. The diversity of family
experiences translates into diverse cultural experiences lived between deaf and
hearing people in the family and social context, pointing to the diversified use of
Libras and the Portuguese language (oral and written), driven by the diversity of
ideas, values, beliefs existing among deaf parents and hearing daughters, who use
different languages, but at different times (childhood, adolescence, adulthood), even
if they live in the same space.
