Urban development and growth of cities have created situations that require maximum use of space. Thus, cutting and filling operations, with the use of techniques for soil containment became needed in the urban environment. Ass well as in various regions, the metropolitan area of Natal / RN is subjected to this process. The city of Natal / RN has predominantly sandy soil. Due to the real estate growth and also the rugged terrain, often need to use containment structures in buildings works located in its metropolitan area. As a result, this article presents a study to evaluate the restraint systems of landfill by comparing three techniques widely employed: gravity wall, reinforced earth and reinforced by geosynthetic soil. The article presents therefore the cost involved in the construction of such structures, heights from 2 to 10 m. They determined the geotechnical properties of a typical soil of the region, which would be used as filling material in said containment structures. Information was collected by searching the relevant literature and refers to surveys of soil conducted in Natal / RN. Other geotechnical parameters, especially those related to the shear strength and deformability of soils were assumed based on the data collected. It is produced also designs and detailed budgets for each construction technique, a survey of quantitative and price of inputs and costs required to implement these structures. Thus, it shows the variation of the cost per unit face area, for each technique, depending on the containment structures height. The results are of great importance for choice and dimensioning of the containment structure to be deployed in the metropolitan region of Natal / RN and can easily serve as a reference for other regions with similar geotechnical parameters.
