Resumen
This thesis seeks to show an approach to urban studies based on two methodologies that seem
conflicting, but that converge in order to better understand the processes and dynamics that
form a socio-spatial phenomenon. In this way, the object of the thesis is the construction of a
methodological alternative for urban studies that broadens them, mainly from sociological
perspectives, stressing that urban approaches have developed in several other senses, making
the scope of sociology narrow, although the phenomenon analyzed is the tourism developed in
the city of Fortaleza and that this is vitally important for that research. The methodological
question transcends all the analytical moments of the study, which is why it is transmuted into
its main object. For this endeavor, it was found that the configurational method and the
procedural sociology of Elias can be harmonized with the Lefebvre’s production of spaces,
with the progressive regressive method being the guide for spatial analysis. For the purpose of
testing the hypothesis created by this methodological framework, we also opted for the use of
a case study in order to spatially delimit the research, with the choice of Avenida Beira-Mar in
Fortaleza, Ceará, a place constructed symbolically and paradigmatically as tourist window of
the city, conditioning the practices and the syntagmatic dimension there (LEFEBVRE, 2016).
Following the method, a description of the paths, subjects and practices of the avenue was
first carried out, written from field research that took place between July and August 2018,
with semi-structured interviews with professionals who have some work occupation in that
place, in addition to the use field diary – a leaner spatial cut was made in order to make the
description feasible, where the Beira-Mar’s Handicraft Fair and its surroundings stood out as
the main fixtures, hence the emphasis given to its elements. Second, a regression was carried
out until the first traditional occupations of the east coast of the city, using the bibliographic
survey, with the objective of understanding the sociogenesis of the practices and the
identification of the groups working there, following Elias (2011) and its analysis process of
the power relations that built leisure and tourism in that space. Finally, as a final act of the
method, a “return to the surface” was thought, progressing between the last decades of the
20th century until the years 2010, identifying the hegemonic group and its essential values for
the consolidation of tourism and for the relations between the established ones and the
outsiders of the configuration, relating the genesis of the interactions there, the present and the
possible as a transformation of Beira-Mar Avenue.
