Resumen
Gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with the occurrence of glucose intolerance, whose onset or recognition is evidenced during pregnancy. Among the risk indicators for this pathology, are socioeconomic conditions, pre-gestational weight and maternal weight gain during pregnancy. This study aimed to determine the socioeconomic, health and anthropometric profile of women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their newborns. The study was a case-control study and the sample was composed of volunteer women attended for delivery in the Mixed Unit of Farms and Maternity School Januário Cicco located in Natal / RN, from August 2015 to August 2016. The volunteers were separated in two groups: control (n = 26) and with gestational diabetes mellitus (n = 25). The data collection was done through the hospital chart and form developed for the study. The socioeconomic and anthropometric variables of the women and their newborns were analyzed, being the differences considered significant when p <0.05. The socioeconomic and health characteristics showed significant differences between the control and diabetic groups for marital status (p = 0.041), prenatal care (p = 0.046) and nutritional follow-up (p = 0.002) where women with diabetes were better attended. In relation to the anthropometric evaluation, the groups evaluated presented significant differences in the pre-gestational (p = 0.02) and gestational (p = 0.00), gestational weight gain (p = 0.006) and birth length of the newborn (p = 0.021). The socioeconomic, health and anthropometric profiles of puerperae and their newborns were evaluated, but further studies are still necessary to contribute to the care intervention for this population.
