Resumen
In Rio Grande do Norte, there is a high industrial demand for wood for energy, as is the case
with the red ceramic industry of the state that uses it in the burning of clay. The wood
presents different energetic characteristics, according to the species, but the
commercialization of this fuel in the RN is carried out based only on the volume of wood. The
objective of the study was to determine the energy density in three different areas under
sustainable forest management in the RN and to carry out the technical evaluation of
Mimosa tenuiflora and Anacardium occidentale in brick burning. The study was developed in
two stages. In the first stage, 5 forest species were selected for area I (Campo Grande), 6 for
area II (Cruzeta) and 12 for area III (Touros), according to the importance value index. Three
trees were collected from each species to determine basic density, upper calorific value, ash
content, fuel value index, species energy density and energy productivity per area. In the
second stage the wood of Anacardium occidentale and Mimosa tenuiflora during the burning
of the bricks was evaluated, according to three treatments in the following proportions of use:
(0JP) 100% occidentale; (50JP) 50% tenuiflora + 50% occidentale; and (100JP) 100%
tenuiflora. It was determined the stacking factor of the wood of both species, the average
total consumption (m³), the contents of volatile matter, ash and fixed carbon, higher calorific
value, basic density, wood moisture content, furnaces, temperature curve of burning, quality
of the bricks and the relation with the temperature, cost of acquisition of the woods, the total
revenue and net revenue from the sale of the bricks. There was a difference in energy
density of forest species and area III (Touros) presented high productivity due to the higher
number of energetic species. The use of Mimosa tenuiflora in the burning of bricks reduced
the consumption of wood and the cost of acquisition, besides increasing the revenue of the
sale of bricks in the treatment 50JP. The commercialization of wood native to areas under
forest management must be carried out not only by volume but also by energy density and its
legal use in the red ceramic industry reduces the cost of fuel acquisition and adds quality to
the bricks.
