The presence of dyes in water bodies represent an environmental risk not only by hindering the passage of light and impairing photosynthesis but also due to the toxic potential of these compounds. The main source of contamination are the effluents form textile industries, which have large amounts of dyes from the dyeing process. To implement effective techniques in color removal is a challenge since these compounds are highly recalcitrant. Moreover, studies have shown degradation products of dyes may be more toxic than its parental compounds. This paper used lettuce seed germination assays to evaluate the toxicity of Reactive Orange 64 after advanced oxidation through combination of hydrogen peroxide and ultrasound. The effect of untreated (T0), treated (T2) and 168 h after treatment (T168) samples on germination, root and hypocotyl growth was analyzed, estimating the inhibition for each parameter. To sample T0 the inhibition percentage was 4,47% on germination; 13,12% on root; and 6,23% on hypocotyl. To sample T0: 10,06% on germination; 63,2% on root; 34,82% on hypocotyl. To sample T16: 13,41% on germination; 62,77% on root; e 39,66% on hypocotyl. It was observed that untreated sample resulted in lower inhibition than the treated ones e these did not show major difference between them. The analysis of relative root growth values for each sample showed T0 didn’t cause harmful effect meanwhile T2 and T168 caused inhibition. Thus, it was concluded that the oxidative treatment led to the formation of toxic products.
