Resumen
The research aims to investigate the role of play in the first grades of elementary school, from the perception of teachers, based on the writings of Vygotsky (1984). Thus, a dialogue is organized with Vygotsky and other authors, who discuss the play. Subsequently, the analyses refers to data from conversation about play with three teachers of the same elementary school. It is an exploratory research (GIL, 1999) that used, as an instrument for collecting data, interviews about a play in the classroom. The data was analyzed with the orientation of the discursive textual analysis (MORAES, 2003) and organized in two categories, established a priori: 1) understanding of play and 2) play and literacy. The findings of the research endorse what the theorists already affirmed about the importance of play for the children learning and development and point out the need of school and teachers to promote the play in the classroom also in elementary education.
